On April 28th, 2015, the Supreme Court of the United States heard oral arguments regarding same sex marriages, in the Obergefell v. Hodges case.   The Court is considering the constitutional issues of whether states must grant marriage licenses without regard to the gender of the parties involved and whether states must recognize same sex marriages that were legally performed in another state.

A ruling from the Supreme Court is expected by the end of the month. The decision is of considerable importance for same sex partners and the LGBT community as a whole.  A decision against the issuance of marriage licences or recognition of same sex marriages in other states would be a major set back for same sex partners seeking the right to marry in states that have not permitted it or the recognition of marriages legally performed in other states . A decision in favor of the issuance of licences and recognition of marriages would set the ground work for true marriage equality and the future recognition of all rights associated with marriage for same sex marriages.
